Every load of cattle you haul leaves weight on the road. Some of it is manure and urine you would expect. The rest is real shrink — fluid and tissue pulled from muscle that does not fully come back for days. On a long haul it runs 6 to 10 percent of body weight, and the stress behind it sets up the respiratory wrecks that show up 10 to 14 days after the animals hit the ground. Hauling looks simple: load, drive, unload. Doing it without paying a heavy toll takes planning most operations skip.

Understand What Shrink Really Is
Shrink comes in two forms, and they matter differently. Excretory shrink is gut fill — manure and urine emptied during the haul. It comes back fast, usually within a day of feed and water. Tissue shrink is fluid drawn out of muscle and cells under stress and dehydration. That one takes days to recover and, on a hard enough trip, some of it never returns as sellable weight.
A short local haul of a few hours might cost 3 to 4 percent, mostly gut fill. A haul over 8 hours in summer heat can hit 8 to 10 percent, and now you are into tissue loss. The distinction tells you where to spend effort: you cannot stop cattle from emptying out, but you can absolutely limit the tissue damage with how you handle heat, timing, and density.
Rule of thumb: budget 1 percent shrink for the first hour on the trailer, then roughly 0.5 to 0.75 percent per hour after that. If your cattle come off worse than that, look at your handling, not your scale.
Load Density Is the Single Biggest Lever
Overload and cattle go down — once one animal falls in a crowded compartment, it often cannot get back up, and you can lose it to trampling or suffocation. Use internal gates to break big open spaces into compartments; a small group in a right-sized pen rides far better than the same animals loose in a long trailer.
Prep the Trailer Before You Prep the Cattle
A trailer that hauled fine last month can hurt cattle today. Walk it before every load.
- Footing — wet manure over aluminum is an ice rink. Bed with sand in summer or straw in winter, and clean between loads so you are not stacking slick on slick.

Time the Haul Around Heat, Feed, and Rest
When you leave matters as much as how you load. Heat is the enemy on nearly every long summer haul, so move cattle in the cool of early morning or after dark and avoid sitting in traffic or at a scale during the afternoon peak. The danger is not just air temperature — it is the temperature-humidity index. Above a THI of about 84, standing cattle on a stopped trailer are in real trouble within 20 minutes.
Feed and water timing is the other half. Do not haul cattle gorged — a belly full of green feed and water sloshing on turns causes more sickness and more mess. Pull them off lush feed a few hours ahead so they empty the worst of it before loading, but never haul them already dehydrated. On hauls beyond about 20 hours, federal rules require unloading for feed, water, and rest, and even short of that limit, breaking a very long trip helps recovery.

Drive Like the Cattle Are Standing Up — Because They Are
Cattle ride standing, bracing against every input you give the truck. Smooth is everything. Accelerate gently, brake early and gradually, and take corners and ramps slow enough that nobody loses footing. The rough spots are predictable: on-ramps, roundabouts, and the first mile out of the yard when animals are still finding their feet.
A driver who takes 30 extra seconds on every ramp and stop delivers cattle that shrink less and bruise less. The load rides on your right foot more than on any gate setting.
Stop-and-go is worse than steady highway miles. If you can route around a city at rush hour, do it — an hour of constant braking beats up cattle more than two hours of smooth interstate. The First 48 Hours Off the Trailer Decide Everything

- Water first, feed second — put them on clean water immediately. Dehydrated cattle that gorge on feed before rehydrating get sick. Make water obvious and easy to find in a strange pen.

- A quiet, roomy receiving pen — low dust, good footing, room to lie down. This is not the time to crowd them.
- Watch closely for 14 days — shipping fever shows up 7 to 14 days out. Pull and treat early; a droopy, off-feed animal on day 9 is the haul stress cashing in.
Weigh them off the trailer and again after 24 to 48 hours of feed and water.
