Crop Management in Barnsbook

Adding Crop Records Pro

Crop records are tied to your pastures and fields. When you add a crop to a field, you record:

  • Crop type — corn, soybeans, wheat, hay, oats, alfalfa, or custom
  • Variety — specific seed variety or hybrid
  • Field — which pasture or field this crop is growing in
  • Planting date — when the crop was seeded
  • Planted acres — how much of the field was planted
  • Seed cost — cost per acre or total seed expense
  • Notes — soil prep, fertilizer applied, or other planting details

Growing Stages

As the season progresses, update each crop through its growing stages — planted, emerged, vegetative, reproductive, and harvest-ready. Barnsbook tracks when each stage was reached so you have a complete growing season record. This is useful for comparing performance across years and fields.

Log field observations like pest pressure, weather events, or irrigation at each growth stage to build a historical record that improves future decisions.

Harvest Records

When a crop is harvested, record:

  • Harvest date
  • Yield — bushels, tons, or bales harvested
  • Yield per acre — calculated automatically
  • Quality notes — test weight, moisture, or other quality metrics
  • Storage location — where the harvested crop is stored

Revenue from Crops

When you sell harvested crop, log the sale in the Revenue section (More > Operations). Link the revenue to the crop record so you can calculate net profitability per field — total revenue minus seed, fertilizer, fuel, and other crop expenses.

Certifications Pro

The Certifications feature (More > Farm Management) lets you track organic certification, USDA certifications, preconditioning programs, and other compliance certifications on a per-field or per-animal basis. For crops, certifications track which fields are certified organic, what inputs are approved, and when the certification expires or must be renewed.
