BarnsBook is offline-first. Here is the short version; the privacy policy is the full text.

Where your data is stored

Everything you enter is saved in a database on your device. There is no sign-in and no BarnsBook account. Photos, receipts and attachments stay on the device.

What leaves the device, and when

FeatureWhat happens
iCloud (iPhone, iPad, Mac)Sync files and backups go to your own iCloud account. Apple, not BarnsBook, holds them.
Team ranchesRecords for a ranch with a team sync through BarnsBook's servers (sync.barnsbook.app). Your device registers with a random ID and device name. Photos and attachments are not uploaded.
SubscriptionsPurchased through Apple. BarnsBook never sees your payment details.
Crash reportsIf the app crashes, a report (error details, device model, OS and app version) goes to Google Firebase Crashlytics. There is no analytics service and no advertising.
App updatesThe app checks BarnsBook's update server for new app code when it opens.
MapsPasture maps and address lookups use your device's map service. Vendor Find Nearby sends your approximate location and search text to OpenStreetMap.
AI model downloadPremium can download a larger AI model from Hugging Face. Everything the AI does with your records stays on the device.
Voice entryUses your phone's speech recognition. Depending on your device, Apple or Google may process the audio on their servers.

Permissions the app may ask for

Each is optional and asked for when you use the related feature.

  • Camera and photos: receipts, animal and pasture photos.
  • Calendar: syncing due dates and deadlines to your calendar.
  • Location: setting a ranch location from where you are, and finding nearby vendors.
  • Microphone and speech recognition: voice entry.
  • Face ID or Touch ID: App Lock. Your biometric data never reaches the app.
  • Notifications: reminders created on your device.

Staying in control

  • Export your records at any time (Export Full Backup, or CSV with Pro).
  • Delete everything with Delete All Data. See Backup, sync & settings.
  • If you shared a ranch with a team, a copy of its records is on BarnsBook's servers until you ask us to remove it. See Delete your data.
